Paris, 1686, by the restaurant's own account. A Sicilian, Procopio Cutò, opens a café on the street now called rue de l'Ancienne Comédie. Voltaire, Diderot, Franklin and Jefferson drank there, Rousseau retired to it in 1752, and the Encyclopédie is said to have been conceived at its tables.
Bourbon Street was named in 1721 by the engineer Adrien de Pauger, who laid out the French Quarter's grid. The whiskey is named for the same royal house, and one historian argues it took the name from the street, where Kentucky whiskey sold as a cheaper cognac.
Franciscan monks planted Georgia's first peaches on St. Simons and Cumberland islands in 1571; after the abolition of slavery pushed farmers off cotton, peach acreage grew, and in 1870 Samuel Rumph found the yellow Elberta, named for his wife. Mattituck, on Long Island's North Fork, has held a strawberry festival since 1955. The French called the Romani bohémiens, believing they had come by way of Bohemia; Henri Murger's stories of the late 1840s made the word an artist's. The tango was born in the 1880s in the port quarters of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, out of milonga, habanera and candombe, the ceremonies of formerly enslaved Africans.
