Beyond the cup

The immune go-to when you feel something coming on. Echinacea root is the backbone — traditionally used to rally the immune system at the first sign of trouble. Fennel and peppermint settle the stomach while cinnamon adds warmth. Brew 2 tsp, steep 10 minutes covered. For maximum support, drink 3–4 cups a day at the onset of symptoms — echinacea works best when you hit it hard and early.

What’s in it

Every herb in the blend, and where to read about it on its own.

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Peppermint

    Mentha x piperita

A natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint that humans have cultivated for centuries. Peppermint's menthol activates TRPM8 cold receptors, creating the sensation of cooling without changing actual temperature. Its rosmarinic acid content is the real pharmacological star in tea — highly water-soluble with genuine anti-inflammatory...

Cool, refreshing, sharp menthol bite, slightly sweet

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Lemongrass

    Cymbopogon citratus

A tropical grass with bright citrus flavor that hides genuine pharmacological activity. Citral — lemongrass's primary compound — relaxes smooth muscle through calcium channel antagonism, addressing the spastic component of digestive discomfort. The surprise: the tea's real bioactives are water-soluble polyphenols (caffeic acid at 20.81...

    Rosehips

    Rosa canina

The fruit of the wild rose, containing 20 to 40 times more vitamin C than oranges in its fresh form. Here's the catch: most of that vitamin C degrades during drying and steeping. What the tea actually delivers is proanthocyanidins — water-extractable tannin antioxidants —...

    Spearmint

    Mentha spicata

Peppermint's gentler parent. Where peppermint delivers a sharp menthol punch, spearmint leads with carvone — a softer, sweeter, rounder mint. It is the everyday mint: easy, approachable, and the one to reach for if peppermint is too cold or too strong. It is also the...

    Elderberry

    Sambucus nigra

The dark berry of the cold season in European tradition — elderberry syrup is one of those things a grandmother made. Its anthocyanins are the same class of pigment as hibiscus's, which is the chemistry behind how often the two are blended. One honest note...

Deep berry, slightly tart, earthy undertones, wine-like when concentrated

    Echinacea

    Echinacea purpurea

The most popular cold-season herb in North America, and one of the most argued about. The trial evidence is mixed and leans mildly positive when it is taken early and often; most of the negative trials used too little, too late. Its alkamides are responsible...

Mildly floral, slightly tingling on the tongue (from alkamides), earthy

    Cinnamon

Cinnamomum verum, C. burmannii, C. loureiroi

The inner bark of a laurel tree, peeled, dried and curled into quills. Three different trees are sold under the one name, and the shop carries all three: Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum), the soft, papery, floral one from Sri Lanka; Korintje (C. burmannii) from the Kerinci...

Sweet, woody, warm — Ceylon floral and citrusy, Korintje smooth and familiar, Saigon bold and fiery-sweet

    Fennel

    Foeniculum vulgare

A sweet, anise-scented seed — the anethole in it is the same compound that makes anise and star anise taste the way they do, though the three plants are unrelated. Fennel is the sausage seed and the after-dinner seed at once: nineteen products here carry...

Sweet, anise-like, green and warm; toasted seeds pop and deepen

Good for

When you feel run down

  • Echinacea, traditionally used in herbal medicine to help relieve the symptoms of colds and upper respiratory infections
  • Elderberry and ginger, the other cold-season herbs
  • Warm, tingling on the tongue, naturally caffeine-free
  • The cup at the first sign of a scratchy throat

These teas are foods, sold as such. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What it goes with

Add a pinch of our Black Pepper Ground — piperine helps your body absorb more of the polyphenols in every sip. Throw in a slice of fresh ginger or a teaspoon of our Ginger Ground for the warming anti-inflammatory kick this blend is missing.

Always handy

I use dillweed often. This dill is fresh and has a nice aroma. I use it in marinades, salad dressings, and on fish. Good stuff.
