What’s in iteucalyptus, licorice root, tulsi herb, ginger, cinnamon pieces, fennel seeds, thyme, cloves, cardamom, black pepper, mullein flowers, alfalfa, elecampane
How to brew it
  • 212°F / 100°C
  • Steep 5–7 minutes COVERED
  • Use 1–2 tsp per 8oz
  • Covering traps the volatile oils that carry most of the flavour

Beyond the cup

The Ayurvedic answer to a heavy chest. Eucalyptus, thyme, and mullein open the airways while licorice soothes the throat. Traditionally used for congestion, tight breathing, and seasonal respiratory discomfort. Steep covered for 10 minutes and breathe in the steam before your first sip — the volatile oils in the steam are doing half the work.

What’s in it

Every herb in the blend, and where to read about it on its own.

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Ginger

    Zingiber officinale

The universal connector — ginger appears in more products than any other ingredient in the collection. The dried root is chemically distinct from fresh ginger: drying converts gingerols to shogaols, which are about twice as pungent, and that is why dried ginger tastes deeper and...

Pungent, warm, slightly sweet, citrusy (fresh); warm, mellow, deep (dried)

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Licorice Root

    Glycyrrhiza glabra

Naturally about fifty times sweeter than sugar, licorice root is the harmoniser — it makes other herbs taste better while adding a deep, warm, anise-like sweetness of its own. It is one of the most used herbs in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. It...

Intensely sweet, warm, slightly earthy, anise-like

    Tulsi (Holy Basil)

    Ocimum tenuiflorum

Sacred in Hinduism and central to Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years, tulsi is classified as a rasayana — an herb that nourishes the whole person. Modern research identifies it as a genuine adaptogen: multiple human trials show significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and fatigue...

Peppery, clove-like, slightly sweet, aromatic, complex

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Mullein

    Verbascum thapsus

One of Europe's oldest respiratory herbs — documented since Dioscorides in the 1st century CE — yet with zero human respiratory clinical trials. The three-pronged respiratory mechanism is mechanistically sound even without clinical proof: saponins reduce bronchial mucus surface tension (expectorant), mucilage coats irritated tissue...

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Alfalfa

    Medicago sativa

One of the most nutrient-dense plants on Earth — alfalfa's deep taproot (up to 15 meters) mines minerals from soil layers most plants never reach. It's a genuine nutritive tonic containing meaningful levels of vitamins A, C, E, K, and virtually every mineral. The saponins...

Mild, grassy, slightly sweet, hay-like — very gentle in blends

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Elecampane

    Inula helenium

A tall, striking plant with an extraordinary root: 44 to 50 per cent inulin, the highest of anything in this collection, plus alantolactone, a sesquiterpene lactone. The inulin does two things at once — prebiotic fibre and a demulcent coating. Traditional European herbalists reached for...

Warm, aromatic, slightly bitter, camphoraceous, unique — unlike any other herb in the collection

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Eucalyptus

    Eucalyptus globulus

The respiratory powerhouse compound 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) makes up 60–90% of eucalyptus essential oil and is the active ingredient in prescription European respiratory medications (GeloMyrtol, Soledum). The critical limitation for tea: cineole is nearly insoluble in water, so the primary delivery mechanism is steam inhalation while...

    Cinnamon

Cinnamomum verum, C. burmannii, C. loureiroi

The inner bark of a laurel tree, peeled, dried and curled into quills. Three different trees are sold under the one name, and the shop carries all three: Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum), the soft, papery, floral one from Sri Lanka; Korintje (C. burmannii) from the Kerinci...

Sweet, woody, warm — Ceylon floral and citrusy, Korintje smooth and familiar, Saigon bold and fiery-sweet

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Fennel

    Foeniculum vulgare

A sweet, anise-scented seed — the anethole in it is the same compound that makes anise and star anise taste the way they do, though the three plants are unrelated. Fennel is the sausage seed and the after-dinner seed at once: nineteen products here carry...

Sweet, anise-like, green and warm; toasted seeds pop and deepen

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Thyme

    Thymus vulgaris

A small woody-stemmed Mediterranean shrub, dried. Thyme is the first herb into a stew and the one that survives longest in it — unlike most dried herbs, it improves with long cooking rather than fading. Eleven products carry it, from poultry seasoning and herbes de...

Warm, earthy, woody and resinous, with a minty, peppery edge that deepens as it cooks

  • Spice · Caffeine-free

    Cloves

    Syzygium aromaticum

An unopened flower bud, picked and dried until it looks like a small nail — which is where the name comes from, via Latin clavus. Cloves are the loudest spice in the cupboard: eugenol makes up somewhere between 45 and 90 per cent of the...

    Hot, sweet, numbing and medicinal-warm

  • Spice · Caffeine-free

    Cardamom

    Elettaria cardamomum

Green pods holding small black seeds, from a ginger-family plant of the Western Ghats — floral, resinous and eucalyptus-cool, quite unlike anything else in the cupboard. It is the third most expensive spice in the world after saffron and vanilla, which is why it is...

Floral, resinous, eucalyptus-cool and sweet-warm; the main volatiles are terpinyl acetate and eucalyptol

    Black Pepper

    Piper nigrum

The dried unripe berry of a climbing vine — the mill on every table, and the most travelled object in any kitchen. Black, white and green pepper are all the same berry, picked at different moments and treated differently: black is picked unripe and dried...

Warm, woody, resinous and sharp; the bite is piperine, roughly a hundredth as potent as capsaicin

Good for

When you're stuffed up

  • Eucalyptus and mullein, traditionally used in herbal medicine as expectorants to help relieve congestion
  • Ginger and cloves, traditionally used to help relieve the symptoms of a cold
  • Warm, camphorous and naturally caffeine-free
  • The cup for a blocked nose at bedtime

These teas are foods, sold as such. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What it goes with

Stack the respiratory support. Add a pinch of our Turmeric Ground for another layer of anti-inflammatory action — the black pepper already in the blend boosts its absorption. Our Rosemary shares eucalyptus's key compound (1,8-cineole) and amplifies the airway-opening effect.

It worked beautifully; perhaps if I add a little more honey, it would make it better… It is a wellness tea, after all!

Always handy

I use dillweed often. This dill is fresh and has a nice aroma. I use it in marinades, salad dressings, and on fish. Good stuff.
