  • Covering traps the volatile oils that carry most of the flavour

Beyond the cup

The heart-health tea with the most clinical research behind it. Tart, cranberry-like, and naturally caffeine-free. Traditionally used to support healthy blood pressure and circulation. Three cups a day is the amount used in most studies. Drink through a straw to protect tooth enamel — the natural acidity is part of what makes it work, but your teeth will thank you. Don't add milk — it deactivates the active compounds.

Good for

For the long term

  • Hibiscus has been studied more than almost any other flower for tea, and is a traditional cooling drink across West Africa, Mexico and Egypt
  • Rosehips and hibiscus together are a traditional source of vitamin C in herbal tea
  • Tart, deep red and naturally caffeine-free — a wonderful iced tea
  • The pitcher tea of summer; a warming cup in winter
What the research looked at

Naturally caffeine-free, sharply tart, and the most colour any single ingredient will give a cup.
Rich in anthocyanins — the same class of pigment that colours blackcurrants and elderberries.
Hibiscus has been studied in a number of trials, unusually as the infusion rather than as an extract; the ingredient guide cites them.
The iced jug in summer, and the one blend that needs no colouring of any kind.

What it goes with

Hibiscus and our Ceylon Cinnamon Ground are the strongest evidence-based wellness pairing in the shop — hibiscus supports blood pressure while cinnamon helps with blood sugar. Add our Cloves Ground and Ginger Ground for the traditional Caribbean sorrel blend.

Also in these blends

On its own, this is the straight thing. It also goes into these blends, each made for a different evening. Read about Hibiscus →

Always handy

I use dillweed often. This dill is fresh and has a nice aroma. I use it in marinades, salad dressings, and on fish. Good stuff.
