How to brew it
  • 212°F / 100°C
  • Steep 5–7 minutes COVERED
  • Use 1–2 tsp per 8oz
  • Covering traps the volatile oils that carry most of the flavour

212°F / 100°C — Steep 15+ minutes in boiling water (longer is better for this one) — Grind seeds first for dramatically better extraction — Consider eating the steeped seeds — Use 1–2 tsp per 8oz

Beyond the cup

Traditionally used to support liver health. Here's the honest truth: milk thistle's active compounds don't dissolve well in water, so the tea delivers a fraction of what capsules do. What you get is the gentler, antioxidant side of the plant — taxifolin and traces of the protective silymarin complex. Steep 2 tsp for 15 minutes in boiling water. For serious liver support, consider supplements alongside.

Good for

When you need a refresh

  • Traditionally used in herbal medicine as a liver tonic
  • Silymarin, the seed's signature compound, is among the most studied of any herb
  • Nutty, mild and naturally caffeine-free
  • The morning-after cup, and the daily one
What the research looked at

Traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as a hepatoprotectant, with over two thousand years of documented use.
Taxifolin extracts well into water and gives the infusion genuine antioxidant value.
A Cochrane review found no increase in adverse events against placebo.
Honest note: the compounds most studied are poorly water-soluble, so an infusion delivers far less of them than a standardised supplement does. The ritual is real; the dose is small.

These teas are foods, sold as such. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What it goes with

A pinch of Black Pepper Ground is your best friend here — piperine dramatically improves absorption of the active compounds. Pair with Turmeric Ground for complementary liver support through a different pathway, and Ginger Ground for digestive comfort.

Also in these blends

On its own, this is the straight thing. It also goes into these blends, each made for a different evening. Read about Milk Thistle →

Always handy

I use dillweed often. This dill is fresh and has a nice aroma. I use it in marinades, salad dressings, and on fish. Good stuff.
