Beyond the cup

The full-spectrum sleep blend. Chamomile, passionflower, and valerian each calm the brain through different pathways — this isn't a one-trick tea. Hawthorn slows the heart rate while warming spices settle the body. Traditionally used for restlessness, physical tension, and the kind of sleeplessness where your body won't let go. Steep covered for 10 minutes. Note: contains St. John's wort — check with your pharmacist if you're on any medications.

What’s in it

Every herb in the blend, and where to read about it on its own.

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Ginger

    Zingiber officinale

The universal connector — ginger appears in more products than any other ingredient in the collection. The dried root is chemically distinct from fresh ginger: drying converts gingerols to shogaols, which are about twice as pungent, and that is why dried ginger tastes deeper and...

Pungent, warm, slightly sweet, citrusy (fresh); warm, mellow, deep (dried)

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Chamomile

    Matricaria chamomilla

The world's most beloved bedtime tea and one of the oldest herbal remedies in continuous use. Ancient Egyptians dedicated it to the sun god Ra. Its gentle, apple-like flavor hides a surprisingly specific mechanism: apigenin binds GABA-A benzodiazepine receptors, creating mild anxiolytic effects supported by...

    Sweet, floral, apple-like, honey finish

    Orange Peel

    Citrus sinensis

Previously dismissed as 'just citrus,' orange peel contains hesperidin — a flavanone with genuine anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular evidence — plus polymethoxyflavones that show remarkable metabolic activity in preclinical studies. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, aged tangerine peel (chen pi) is one of the most prescribed herbs....

    Bright, citrusy, slightly bitter, aromatic

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Passionflower

    Passiflora incarnata

The fast-acting calming herb. Unlike valerian (which needs 2–4 weeks to build), passionflower works from the first cup — it increases synaptic GABA concentration through reuptake inhibition and contributes its own endogenous GABA. Critically, passionflower tea was tested directly in an RCT and demonstrated significant...

Mild, slightly grassy, earthy, gentle — blends easily with other herbs

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Hawthorn

    Crataegus monogyna

The cardiovascular herb with the deepest clinical evidence base in European phytotherapy. Hawthorn berry and leaf extracts have been studied in over 30 clinical trials for heart failure, demonstrating significant improvements in exercise tolerance, ejection fraction, and symptoms. The active compounds — oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs)...

Mildly sweet, slightly tart, fruity, apple-like undertones

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    Valerian Root

    Valeriana officinalis

The heavy-hitter sleep herb with the most complex pharmacology in the collection. Valerenic acid acts as a beta-2/beta-3 subunit-selective GABA-A positive allosteric modulator — a mechanism distinct from benzodiazepines and from chamomile's apigenin. It also demonstrates 5-HT5a partial agonism targeting the suprachiasmatic nucleus for circadian...

  • Herb · Caffeine-free

    St. John's Wort

    Hypericum perforatum

One of the most studied herbs in the world, and one that demands more caution than anything else on this shelf. The compound most associated with its effects, hyperforin, is strongly fat-soluble and extracts at only about 1 per cent into hot water, while the...

Slightly bitter, astringent, earthy, mild — not unpleasant in blends

  • Spice · Caffeine-free

    Cinnamon

Cinnamomum verum, C. burmannii, C. loureiroi

The inner bark of a laurel tree, peeled, dried and curled into quills. Three different trees are sold under the one name, and the shop carries all three: Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum), the soft, papery, floral one from Sri Lanka; Korintje (C. burmannii) from the Kerinci...

Sweet, woody, warm — Ceylon floral and citrusy, Korintje smooth and familiar, Saigon bold and fiery-sweet

  • Spice · Caffeine-free

    Cardamom

    Elettaria cardamomum

Green pods holding small black seeds, from a ginger-family plant of the Western Ghats — floral, resinous and eucalyptus-cool, quite unlike anything else in the cupboard. It is the third most expensive spice in the world after saffron and vanilla, which is why it is...

Floral, resinous, eucalyptus-cool and sweet-warm; the main volatiles are terpinyl acetate and eucalyptol

  • Fruit · Caffeine-free

    Orange

    Citrus x sinensis

Dried orange — pieces, and sometimes the blossom — as distinct from the dried peel sold as a spice. In a tea blend orange does something peel alone cannot: the fruit brings sweetness and body where the peel brings only the bright bitter oil. Eleven...

Sweet, round citrus with a little bitterness behind it; brighter and less sharp than lemon

    Learn more

  • Fruit · Caffeine-free

    Blueberry

    Vaccinium spp.

Dried blueberries and sometimes the leaf — seven products carry one or the other. The berry brings a deep, slightly winey sweetness and the anthocyanins that make a cup go purple-red; the leaf, like strawberry leaf, brings tannin and body rather than fruit. For a...

Deep, winey sweetness with a soft acidity; stains the cup purple-red

  • Fruit · Caffeine-free

    Apple

    Malus domestica

Dried apple pieces are the workhorse of fruit tea, and twenty-six products here carry them — more than any other fruit. They are doing a structural job rather than a flavour one: apple gives a fruit infusion its body and a mild background sweetness, and...

Good for

When you can't sleep

  • Valerian and passionflower, traditionally used in herbal medicine as sleep aids
  • Traditionally used to help relieve restlessness at bedtime
  • Warm spices over an earthy base; naturally caffeine-free
  • The strongest bedtime blend on the shelf

These teas are foods, sold as such. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What it goes with

The bedtime ritual, upgraded. Steep one of our Cinnamon Sticks alongside — cinnamon steadies blood sugar overnight, and the crashes that wake you at 3 AM. Our Lavender Flower adds physical relaxation that bridges the gap between the blend's brain-calming and body-calming herbs.

Always handy

I use dillweed often. This dill is fresh and has a nice aroma. I use it in marinades, salad dressings, and on fish. Good stuff.
