Beyond the cup

The heavy hitter for sleep. Earthy, pungent, and strong — this one's not about flavour, it's about function. Traditionally used for insomnia, restlessness, and muscle tension. Steep 1–2 tsp in just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Give it 2–4 weeks of nightly use — valerian builds over time. Best blended with chamomile or lavender to take the edge off the taste.

Good for

When you can't sleep

  • Traditionally used in herbal medicine as a sleep aid
  • Traditionally used to help relieve restlessness and nervousness
  • Earthy and strong-smelling — blend it with something sweet; naturally caffeine-free
  • The last cup before lights out
What the research looked at

Traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as a sleep aid, to help promote sleep — and one of the most studied herbs in European phytotherapy, with over two hundred clinical studies.
Also traditionally used as a calmative for restlessness.
It builds: the tradition and the research both describe two to four weeks of consistent use rather than a single cup.
Naturally caffeine-free — and it smells like old socks, which everyone should be warned about before opening the bag.

These teas are foods, sold as such. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What it goes with

Valerian is the muscle, chamomile is the mind, and a Cinnamon Stick ties them together for a bedtime blend that covers all the bases. For the traditional European sleep formula, add our Lavender Flower and a touch of Nutmeg.

Also in these blends

On its own, this is the straight thing. It also goes into these blends, each made for a different evening. Read about Valerian Root →

Always handy

I use dillweed often. This dill is fresh and has a nice aroma. I use it in marinades, salad dressings, and on fish. Good stuff.
